MSc in Conflict, Security

and Development

The International Development Department

- MSc/Graduate Diploma Courses

Civil war, insurgencies and unrest affect many areas in the developing world.  The poor are often among the worst victims of conflict, and lack of security can make the best-planned and implemented development initiatives worthless.  For this reason, governments and development agencies are paying renewed attention to issues of conflict and security.

This is a new programme which explores the issues of conflict, security and development from an interdisciplinary standpoint, combining the theoretical rigour of security studies and the practical experience of development.  Specific issues examined are

  • Dynamics and history of conflict in developing countries
  • Theoretical approaches to understanding conflict
  • Drivers of conflict
  • The relationship between global and local actors involved in conflict
  • The complex relationship between development and security
  • Implications of types of conflict for post-conflict reconstruction
  • Design and implementation of post-conflict development strategies
  •

The programme is designed for individuals already working in development or diplomacy or recent graduates with some work/volunteer experience seeking careers in development or diplomacy or NGOs related to conflict and post-conflict reconstruction.

Students will be part of the vibrant postgraduate community in the International Development (IDD).  The department has a diverse student community including recent graduates and more seasoned professionals.  Recent students have come from Australia, Germany, Ghana, Indonesia, Japan, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Turkey, Uganda, UK, USA, and Vietnam.
