Short Courses in SSR related subjects based in the UK

 



Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution

Based in central London, the CEDR runs training courses and educational seminars on mediation, negotiation and conflict resolution aimed at business people and professionals, including a five day accredited course in Mediator Skills Training. Information on forthcoming training courses is available here.



Centre for Security Sector Management (CSSM)

Based in Cranfield University, the CSSM runs short one-week courses aligned to the key modules in their new MSc in security sector management. This provides short course applicants with opportunities to engage and network with the wider cohort of MSc students. The dates and titles of courses until June 2009 are listed below:

  • Dec 08: Change Management and Leadership
  • Dec 08: Strategic Planning for Security and Development
  • Mar 09: Managing Security Sector Projects and Programmes
  • Jun 09: Managing Public Security and the Rule of Law


International Alert

International Alert (IA) is committed to ensuring that the learning it acquires through work is used to inform and strengthen peacebuilding policy and practice. IA provides training and capacity-building on specific topics for a wide variety of local and international organisations, including NGOs, governments, international development and donor agencies, multi-lateral institutions and businesses. Some of this training is through tailored workshops and seminars, but a range of training materials and resource packs is also produced.

Current training programmes:

  • Practical training courses for people interested in, or already working in, the prevention, management and resolution of violent conflict
  • Conflict-sensitive development aid and humanitarian assistance
  • Conflict-sensitive business practice in the extractive industries
  • The role of women in peacebuilding
  • Small arms issues


International Human Rights Network (IHRN)

The International Human Rights Network will be conducting a one week course in Human Rights Fieldwork - Principles, Strategies and Skills from 27th October - 3rd November 2007 at National University of Ireland, Maynooth with a Field Exercise at the Irish Defence Forces training facility Coolmoney Camp, County Wicklow, Ireland. The course is aimed at human rights specialists and field practitioners from the civilian and military police and international development and humanitarian aid organisations.



Mediation Northern Ireland

Mediation Northern Ireland provides professional training courses in areas such as Negotiation Skills, Group Mediation Skills and Building Good Relations. These courses can be tailored to suits the needs of individual organisations. Mediation Northern Ireland will also be hosting the 2nd European Mediation Conference in April 2008.



The Peace and Reconciliation Group

The PRG is based in Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland and looks to work towards fostering understanding and reconciliation in Northern Ireland. They offer tailored training packages to community, private and public groups with a range of accredited and non-accredited courses available in areas such as conflict resolution, mediation and training of trainers.



Responding to Conflict

Responding to Conflict offers a range of training and learning opportunities in the field of conflict transformation, both in the UK and internationally.

  • Peacebuilding: Strengthening Policy and Practice
    17-21 November 2008
    Birmingham, UK


    is designed to assist participants to identify constructive ways of engaging with the unpredictable and rapidly changing circumstances within which many relief and development agencies work. It focuses on the relationship between policy and practice in complex situations.

The Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF)

GFN-SSR has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with DCAF. This is supported by an annual workplan outlining particular activities for cooperation and areas for information exchange.

   

GSDRC: Governance and Social Development Resource Centre

GFN-SSR works closely with our sister project, the GSDRC, which specialises in information and resources on specific governance and social development issues.
