Security Sector Reform Practitioners’ Course

June's course was well attended with participants and presenters from the three HMG departments of the FCO, DFID and the MOD being joined by representatives from The Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF), The International Security System Advisory Team (ISSAT), Saferworld, UNDP, Control Risks, GTZ, and International Alert.

The course aimed to:

  1. Consolidate participants understanding of security sector reform and its various components;
  2. Update participants on UK Government SSR policy and the resources available to support them;
  3. Develop participants understanding of the complexities of translating SSR policy in practice through the use of case studies and practical examples;
  4. Discuss lessons learned and best/worst practice from previous and ongoing SSR programmes;
  5. Enable participants to hear from colleagues in other government departments and institutions on their perspectives on SSR, defining policy priorities, programming and practice.
