Security Sector Reform Practitioners’ Course
16-18 June 2008
June's course was well attended with participants from the three HMG departments of the FCO, DFID and the MOD being joined by representatives from The British Association of Private Security Companies (BAPSC), NATO, Conciliation Resources, The United Nations, Nigerian Prisons, Saferworld, Midland Centre for Criminology and Criminal Justice, The Folke Bernadotte Academy, and the European University Institute.
The course aimed to:
- Consolidate participants understanding of security sector reform and its various components;
- Update participants on UK Government SSR policy and the resources available to support them;
- Develop participants understanding of the complexities of translating SSR policy in practice through the use of case studies and practical examples;
- Discuss lessons learned and best/worst practice from previous and ongoing SSR programmes;
- Enable participants to hear from colleagues in other government departments and institutions on their perspectives on SSR, defining policy priorities, programming and practice.

GFN-SSR has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with DCAF. This is supported by an annual workplan outlining particular activities for cooperation and areas for information exchange.
GFN-SSR works closely with our sister project, the GSDRC, which specialises in information and resources on specific governance and social development issues.
