Security Sector Reform Practitioners’ Course

3-5 December 2007

This course followed a similar structure to previous SSR courses run by GFN-SSR, but included a very informative session looking at SSR in Sudan. This was due to the participation of eight Sudanese representatives, including members of the Sudan Parliament, the South Sudan Parliament, the Sudanese Army and the Sudan People's Liberation Army.

The course aimed to:

  1. Consolidate participants understanding of security sector reform and its various components;
  2. Update participants on UK Government SSR policy and the resources available to support them;
  3. Develop participants understanding of the complexities of translating SSR policy in practice through the use of case studies and practical examples;
  4. Discuss lessons learned and best/worst practice from previous and ongoing SSR programmes;
  5. Enable participants to hear from colleagues in other government departments and institutions on their perspectives on SSR, defining policy priorities, programming and practice.
