About GFN-SSR
What we do
GFN-SSR offers a variety of services including:
- Information Sharing, through the website and various seminars, meetings and events
- Networking and supporting the creation and development of regional networks, enabling local voices to be heard in international policy making
- Research, through a helpdesk for policymakers and the managing of larger-scale research projects
- Training and Capacity-Building, including management and facilitation of training sessions and development of training materials
Information Sharing
- GFN-SSR aims to be a comprehensive information resource on SSR, providing access to key documents and latest thinking in the field through our continuously updated Document Library. This is regularly reviewed to maintain the quality of documents and to ensure a balance between academic and practical materials.
- Topic Guides provide an overview of specific SSR themes, linking them to key literature in their respective areas. They aim to present information in a concise, relevant and easily accessible manner targeted at policymakers.
- ssrbulletin is GFN-SSR's monthly e-newsletter used to disseminate information on developments in the SSR field, relevant policy news, events, conferences and training courses.
- A regularly updated Organisations Directory listing NGOs, think-tanks, advocacy groups, donor agencies and international organisations invovled in SSR-related activities around the world.
- A Consultants service putting you in touch with key experts when you need them.
Networking
- GFN-SSR supports and develops networks of NGOs, academics and civil society groups active at local, national and regional levels on security and justice sector issues and to facilitate joint working among network members. GFN-SSR facilitates information flow from the networks to the UK Government, other bilateral actors and multilateral institutions in order to influence policymaking and programming, enabling them to reflect the needs and views from the ground.
- GFN-SSR aims to maintain a watch on developments in security and justice sector reform policy, analysis and practice, and to disseminate information to network members.
Research
- GFN-SSR runs a Research Helpdesk for UK Government officials. This is a rapid response desk-based service that conducts research assignments of up to two days providing information to policymakers.
- Larger-scale research projects can also be commissioned and will be delivered either in-house or in collaboration with external researchers on an ad hoc basis.
Training and Capacity-Building
- GFN-SSR develops SSR Training Programmes, including the UK Government's SSR Practitioners' Course for civil servants held four times per year.
- Policy seminars on different aspects of SSR are held both at the request of the UK Government and other partners, and also when we identify a need, gap in thinking, or new hot topic worth exploring further.

GFN-SSR has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with DCAF. This is supported by an annual workplan outlining particular activities for cooperation and areas for information exchange.
GFN-SSR works closely with our sister project, the GSDRC, which specialises in information and resources on specific governance and social development issues.
